“there had to exist a painting [...] where the dream becomes thought, where the line becomes existence.” | Michel Seuphor
Cnidaria Scyphozoa, the scientific name for jellyfish, is a series that flirts with biological labeling techniques, freezing the fluidity of jellyfish tentacles in abstract moments, transforming simple shapes into complex structures. From the title to the arrangement of the pieces, scientific methodology serves as a guide for capturing nature immortalized in a small universe of observation.
Within a dome, the paper-cut artwork rests on entomological pins over plaster plates. The viewer’s gaze is immediately captured by the organic and abstract complexity that unfolds before their eyes. A soft and subtle monochromaticism envelops the composition, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere.
The artist’s interest in aquatic beings marks a return to the beginnings of his artistic journey. Scaling down the scope of his language, Giuliano Martinuzzo finds a way to clearly showcase the delicacy of his work. In his creation, paper ceases to be a background and becomes the protagonist. Cut with a scalpel, the material ventures into organic forms, paths that invite imagination, inviting the observer to interpret a world that exists only in the mind.
